Carbon Reduction Plan
Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP)
Company: PREM Management
Date: October 26, 2023
Plan Period: 2024 - 2028 (With baseline data from 2021-2023)
1.0 Executive Summary
PREM Management is committed to operating as a sustainable and environmentally responsible production company. This Carbon Reduction Plan formalises our commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, with ambitious interim targets for 2026. Recognising our influence in the media industry, we pledge to minimise the environmental impact of our operations, from production to post-production.
Over the past three years (2021-2023), we have laid the groundwork by adopting sustainable habits, primarily through the elimination of single-use plastics, prioritising digital workflows, and investing in energy-efficient Apple MacBook technology. Our plan for the next four years (2024-2028) is significantly more structured and ambitious. It focuses on a radical overhaul of travel logistics (a major emissions source), a full transition to renewable energy, and the establishment of a sustainable procurement policy.
This document outlines our historical actions, defines our baseline, sets clear targets, and details the specific measures we will implement across all three scopes of emissions to ensure we meet our goals.
2.0 Definitions & Baseline
GHG Protocol: We adhere to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol corporate standard, categorising our emissions into three scopes.
Scope 1 (Direct): Emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company (e.g., fuel combustion in company vehicles).
Scope 2 (Indirect - Energy): Emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the company.
Scope 3 (Other Indirect): All other indirect emissions from our value chain (e.g., business travel, accommodation, waste, purchased goods/services, capital goods like equipment).
Baseline Year: We will use 2023 as our baseline year for setting future reduction targets. A detailed audit for this year will be completed in Q1 2024.
3.0 Past Performance: Emissions Reduction (2021-2023)
Before formalising this plan, PREM Management proactively implemented several key initiatives that have reduced our carbon footprint:
Digital-First Workflow: We drastically reduced our reliance on physical media (hard drives, memory cards kept to a minimum), paper (for scripts, call sheets, contracts), and printing. Cloud-based sharing and collaboration became the standard.
Investment in Efficient Technology: The deployment of 7 Apple MacBooks for production and post-production replaced older, less energy-efficient desktop computers. MacBooks are highly energy-efficient, particularly on battery power, and are built with a high percentage of recycled materials.
Elimination of Single-Use Plastics: We implemented a policy to eliminate single-use plastics on all shoots. Crew are provided with reusable water bottles and coffee cups. Catering is instructed to avoid plastic packaging and utensils on site.
Remote Collaboration: The adoption of Zoom and other online tools for client meetings, edits, and reviews became standard practice, reducing the need for unnecessary travel.
4.0 Carbon Reduction Targets (2024-2028)
We set the following ambitious but achievable targets against our 2023 baseline:
By end of 2028:
Reduce overall carbon emissions by 25%.
Reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 60% through the transition to renewable energy and EV travel.
Measure and reduce Scope 3 emissions by 15%, focusing on travel and procurement.
Long-term Goal: Achieve Net Zero by 2050.
5.0 Action Plan: Emissions Reduction by Scope (2024-2028)
Scope 1: Direct Emissions
Current Source: Minimal. Primarily from the combustion of fuel in any rented or owned production vehicles.
Initiative 1: Electric Vehicle (EV) Transition for Productions.
Action: By the end of 2024, mandate that all local crew travel (to shoots/meetings) must use public transport or travel together. By 2028, partner with a car rental service that provides EVs (e.g., Zipcar, Enterprise EV fleet) and make them the default choice for any production requiring vehicle hire.
Responsibility: Production Manager / Head of Creative
Target: 95% of ground transport for productions to be EV or zero-emission by end of 2028.
Scope 2: Indirect Emissions from Energy
Current Source: Electricity powering home office spaces and the charging of our 7 MacBooks and other equipment.
Initiative 1: Transition to 100% Renewable Energy.
Action: Switch our office electricity tariff to a certified 100% renewable energy provider. For remote workers (a significant portion of our energy use), we will provide a stipend or guidance to encourage them to also switch to a green energy tariff at home.
Responsibility: Operations Manager
Target: 100% renewable electricity for all company operations by Q2 2024.
Initiative 2: Optimise Technology Energy Use.
Action: Implement a policy for all MacBooks to be set to energy-saving mode. Use smart power strips to eliminate phantom load from chargers and peripherals when not in use.
Responsibility: All Staff
Target: Reduce IT-related energy consumption by 10% by 2028.
Scope 3: All Other Indirect Emissions (Our Biggest Impact)
Current Sources: Business travel (flights, trains, taxis), accommodation, equipment manufacturing/purchasing, waste generation.
Initiative 1: Coordinated Group Travel (The "PREM Pod" Travel System)
Action: This is our flagship initiative. For all shoots and in-person meetings:
Centralised Meeting Point: Crew will meet at a single, central location.
Group Transport: Instead of 5-7 individual cars, the entire team will travel together in a single, hired people carrier or minibus. This will be an EV as per the Scope 1 initiative.
Planning: Shoot schedules will be designed to facilitate this. This reduces emissions, builds team camaraderie, and reduces parking issues on location.
Responsibility: Production Coordinator / HOP
Target: Implement on 90% of all suitable productions by end of 2024, achieving a >50% reduction in travel emissions per project.
Initiative 2: Sustainable Procurement & Equipment Lifecycle
Action:
Purchase: All new technology purchases (e.g., future MacBook replacements) must be the most energy-efficient model available and favour vendors with strong environmental credentials (e.g., Apple's environmental reports).
Lifecycle: Extend the useful life of all equipment to a minimum of 5 years through careful maintenance. At end-of-life, equipment will be sold, donated, or recycled responsibly through Apple's recycling program.
Responsibility: IT Manager / Head of Creative
Target: 100% of new IT purchases meet our sustainability criteria by 2024.
Initiative 3: Sustainable Catering & Waste Management
Action: Mandate that all production catering must be from local suppliers, be primarily plant-based (which has a significantly lower carbon footprint), and use no single-use plastics. Implement a clear recycling and composting system on all shoots.
Responsibility: Production Coordinator
Target: Zero waste to landfill from productions by 2028.
Initiative 4: Carbon Literacy & Training
Action: All staff will undergo carbon literacy training in 2024. Emissions impact will become a standard agenda item in production meetings, alongside creative and budgetary discussions.
Responsibility: Managing Director
Target: 100% of staff trained by Q3 2024.
6.0 Monitoring, Reporting and Review
Tracking: We will use a dedicated carbon accounting software (e.g., Greenly, Normative) or a consultant to calculate our annual footprint based on travel data, energy bills, and procurement logs.
Reporting: An annual Carbon Reduction Report will be published internally and made available to clients and stakeholders, transparently tracking progress against our targets.
Review: This plan is a live document. It will be formally reviewed and updated annually by the management team to ensure it remains relevant and ambitious.
7.0 Conclusion
This Carbon Reduction Plan demonstrates PREM Management’s profound commitment to environmental stewardship. By working together as a team, innovating our processes, and holding ourselves accountable, we will not only reduce our impact on the planet but also inspire our clients, partners, and the wider industry to follow suit. The "PREM Pod" travel system is a symbol of our collective effort—moving forward together, sustainably.
